Our verdict

A sensible cheap cover for intermittent outdoor duty; go thicker (12-16 mil poly) or canvas for permanent exposure.

Tarp sizing is where budget brands quietly cheat: many list the cut size, so an "8x10" arrives several inches short each way after hemming. CARTMAN labels this Waterproof Tarp by finished size — the unfolded sheet actually measures 8 by 10 feet, which matters when you're covering a specific woodpile or trailer bed. At 8 mil thick it sits in the medium-duty class: fine for rain shelter, camping ground cover and keeping mowers or firewood dry, but not the sheet to leave lashed to a roof through a year of UV, wind and abrasion — CARTMAN sells 12 and 16 mil versions for that. We found no substantive independent buyer feedback on this exact 8x10 model as of July 2026, so judge it on the honest sizing and the spec sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is an 8 mil tarp heavy duty?

No — 8 mil is medium duty. It sheds rain and dust fine, but for long-term outdoor exposure or abrasive loads, 12-16 mil poly or a canvas tarp holds up better.

What does "finished size" mean on a tarp?

It's the measured size after the edges are hemmed. Many tarps advertise the larger pre-hem cut size and arrive 3-5% smaller; a finished-size 8x10 truly unfolds to 8 by 10 feet.

Can I leave a poly tarp outside all year?

Polyethylene degrades under UV even when rated UV-resistant. Expect a season or two of full-sun service from a mid-weight tarp, and store it out of the sun between uses to extend its life.
